WATERFACING, the river becomes common vision and experience for the RISD community, and fosters a new mindset. Our greatest environmental asset, the river offers beauty and connection to the natural world rare in urban campuses. This project engages the RISD community in phenomenoloical conditions of water, air, and light.
WATERFACING responds to rising sea levels and flooding which the campus will inevitably face. In knowing the environment, it becomes ours: awareness of the life of the river will steer the community to stewardship.
WATERFACING enhances the historic campus by engaging the public as they view our artwork and activity through an architectural language of wide angles, functional apertures, and transparencies. It transforms the river into a social channel for the diverse and dyanmic RISD community in need of place for interdisciplinary dialogue.
WATERFACING unfolds, as a community of creators converses with fresh media: clean paper, blank canvas, and the white box.
